My song Rise is about rising above the noise of society. The noise inside your head. And most importantly, following your gut to live the life you deserve!
It is about rising above the challenges we face and never giving up.
I collaborated with Meshal Al jaser on the music video - one of the most talented directors I have ever met. I am so lucky to have worked with him on this video. I did not want to tell him my concept behind the song, because I wanted to see his vision when he heard it.
The story he tells through the video addresses the topic of arranged marriage. Although it is not exactly the story that inspired me to write the song, the conclusion is the same:
If you know what you want in life and you find what inspires you, follow that path!
It is your life and you have got to live it!
The man I marry in the video is a mannequin - a metaphor for not really knowing the other person in the relationship of an arranged marriage.
We all interpret stories differently and that is why I am not going to explain my idea behind the ending of the music video.
I want you to come up with your own conclusions to the ending and what it means to you.
It was such a great experience writing this song, I wrote it with Grandson, who is a super talented singer and songwriter himself.
He helped me tell my story in the most concise way and fit it into a song.
When I was eleven years old I decided that I wanted to pursue music.
I knew it was my calling. I knew it was what I wanted to do.
But at the same time, I also felt that I would not be able to do it. I felt ashamed for wanting something so badly, something that felt so bad for me to want.
Sometimes our surroundings can leave a mark on us. They can leave a permanent idea in our mind.
Even when we know it does not really make sense, it stays there no matter how hard we try to shake it off.
As an artist you get to a point where you realize:
if you do not let yourself go,
if you do not let yourself be vulnerable,
then you will not be able to truly reach people.
And that is what happened to me. I got to a point where I realized that I have to start listening to me. Not the 'me' that is constantly thinking. I have to get out of my own head and listen to my gut.
It does not mean that I am never in my head. We are all human at the end of the day. We have to constantly remind ourselves that we actually do have the answers. That there is a reason we are here, and that reason is definitely correlated to what we are passionate about.
What Inspires You?
Ask yourself why you love something?
How does it make you feel?
What do you want to be able to do with it?
That is why you are here.
You need to know that everything else will fall into place because everything you answered to those questions is the truth.
It is authentic.
It is your gut talking.
Your head is the one telling you that you are being impractical. That you should maybe take another path, a path that will make it easier for you to survive.
But we are not here to survive, we are here to live!
Doing what you love is not always the easy way. Especially in the beginning, but in the long run you will not have any regrets.
After all, how can we rise if we are already at the top? We all start somewhere, and rising is a process of ups and downs. Life is a rollercoaster ride for every one of us. So we may as well enjoy every twist and every turn. Listen to your gut and follow the path wherever it leads you.
What I mean here is that sometimes you may have an idea in your head, an image about how doing what you love will look like.
(that’s your head talking again)
But you cannot see or know what the future holds. All you can do is live in the now and follow the journey that your passion is taking you on.
When you catch yourself thinking ahead, remember that it is ok, and bring yourself back.
It’s time for you to rise above the noise. Time for you to hit the ground running, and to believe in yourself.
Believe in the power of your authenticity and the power of your truth. You will be above the ground before you even know it.
